Let’s Talk a “Little” Football

Let’s Talk a “Little” Football

November 24, 2009 by Steve · Leave a Comment

When I say little, I mean youth football. I have heard some talk over the past several months of a disagreement on which youth football program kids should be playing in. Pop Warner football makes a lot of sense to me. This is as close to “High School” football rules and play as you can [...]

What sport should my kid play?

Not that we think that parents should specify what sports their kids could play, we at HomeTeam Sports understand that there’s a definite preference that some parents “want.”
Since the twenty-something editorial staff at the publication don’t have kids yet (our publishers are quite happily married and have their kids involved in so many youth sports [...]

Scoring with scholarships

Most parents can attest to the high cost of youth sports. With registration fees, equipment and travel, it may feel like you’re supporting your own little professional athlete.

However, it would be a shame for a child not to be able to take the field due to financial reasons, and luckily organizations like the Spokane Youth Sports Association (SYSA) offer need-based scholarships to take the sting out of the financial costs of their programs.

Pop Warner goes Bowling

While area colleges find themselves out of bowl contention halfway through the football season, fans can turn their attention to the only area teams who will be playing in a college stadium this postseason.
Several Inland Northwest Pop Warner football teams will be traveling to Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore., for the Linn Benton Bowl games. [...]

Spokane AAU hits the hardwood

With AAU basketball kicking off this weekend with the Boo Ball Tournament at various locations around Spokane and Spokane Valley, yet another season of youth basketball is on the clock.
And if the support behind Hoopfest and Gonzaga are any indicator, the Lilac City certainly treats youth basketball the right way with 200 teams competing.
“Which is [...]

A Freeman Foundation

John Hays started teaching at Freeman High School in 1984 and has never left.
“Freeman is a special place,” said Hays. “Teachers come over here and very seldom do they leave.”
Located 19 miles south of Spokane, Freeman High School probably doesn’t want Hays to leave. Since 1984, he’s been a coach in one capacity or another, [...]

Spectators need to be civil

I think I’ve found what youth football is all about after watching a thrilling double-overtime youth football game last weekend.
The best part about this game was the atmosphere. The kids out on the field looked like they were genuinely having fun and the outcome was just more of an afterthought than a goal.

Captain of the ship

Coaching sports is a great and rewarding job. There’s nothing like watching one of the kids move on to greater teams and succeed, if you ask most coaches. However, so much more than just calling plays goes into coaching. From leading a Pop Warner football team to teaching life lessons to inmates, one local coach does it all.
