Bear of a team

As the GSL football faithful get ready for the knock-em-out bashfest that will be the CV-Ferris football game this Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Central Valley, one question lingers… just how good are the Bears?
The Ferris Saxons have established themselves as the superpower of the GSL, running to an undefeated season last year and they’re well on their way again with a 5-0 league record so far this season.

CV, while no stranger to success, was somewhat under the radar this year with Ferris and defending 4A state champions LC basking in most of the preseason football hype.

The Bears disposed of LC on Sept. 19 with a 33-21 victory over the Tigers, who were without their starting quarterback Taylor Eglet. While that win was impressive, and CV certainly showed they could control the line of scrimmage, their schedule has been largely front heavy with the 3A schools and the less competitive 4A schools in the league.

These next few weeks will prove pivotal for the Bears, and while a victory over Ferris would put them in the driver’s seat for the state playoffs, they still have two remaining games against Mead (4-2) and Gonzaga Prep (5-1).

And those guys are no slouches. Just ask the rest of the GSL.

With the way the league has been going this year, if the Bears stumble down the stretch, there will be plenty of teams eager to step up and take the spot as the top team in the GSL.
